Community Hub | Design Concept
At the north entrance of the site we located a new community Hub, the majority of the community facilities are currently located in the northern, historic town centre of Mussleburgh. This has left the residents of the south of the town with more than 25 minutes’ walk from community facilities. The new community hub is particularly important given that the adjacent community such as Stoneybank have a high density of residents over 65 years old. The new community hub also includes a community theatre and is connected to a block of student housing. The community hub structure emulates the traditional barn architype as the land the site is on has historically been agricultural. The community hub aims to be thriving and engaging intergenerational space where both young and senior citizens from the local community can come together and inhabit the building through education, leisure and generate community spirit. The program of the community hub endeavors to invigorate the site and challenge the orthodoxies of how we believe an older life can and should be lived and placing gerontological affordance at the heart of civic buildings.
