Sophie Templeton is interested in the application of the female body as a vehicle to challenge society’s restrictive approach to femininity and female sexuality. She creates grotesquely contorted creatures- primarily angst-inducing sculptural installations and drawings. Her work exhibits distortions of basic feminine anatomy as a means to contradict the limitations that are imposed upon a female’s body, and subsequently her identity, by socially accepted patriarchal mentalities. By taking ownership of the form and repurposing it against heteronormative prejudices, Sophie's work demonstrates an unashamed, outspoken reclamation of power. Since there is often an overtly erotic undercurrent throughout her working practice, she is able to investigate issues surrounding female desire and the links between sexuality and beauty within Western society. Her work presents a somewhat obscene- yet honest- narrative that intends to alarm the audience, forcing them to reconsider feminist arguments. Sophie enjoys creating confusion in the viewer and recognise, while often bizarre, her work emanates a sense of familiarity whilst simultaneously inciting a deep emotional reaction.
