“Kant’s theory was that we actively construct a picture of the world rather than merely documenting objective events, that our perceptions are not based just on what exists but, rather, are somehow created—and constrained—by the general features of the mind.” (Mlodinow 2013: 30)

My two projects are based on the semicircle. Every simple semicircle in life has potential and is worth thinking about. My works focus on the challenges and breakthroughs of inherent cognition, offering a fresh perspective on the things we take for granted.

100 Days Project

The project is inspired by a ring placed in a box: When the exposed part of a ring is semicircle, must be the same of the other part? To explore the possibility of hidden part, I designed 100 objects within 100 days, each of which is associated with a ‘prompt’ word. Each object maintains the same upper semicircle, but the lower half has unexpected special features. Some of these objects can be worn as rings, but some have no function.

They are presented to the audience as 100 blind boxes which are uncertain, unpredictable, and surprising.

Ambiguous Objects

I chose six objects of personal significance to me which explore the possibility of the semicircle in everyday life.

When the objects are hidden, they show different sizes of semicircles; when they are fully exposed, they are presented as simple objects that people will unavoidably recognize and identify. Although these objects have familiar outlines, they have lost their original definitions and functions.

This body of work illustrates my thinking about these defined objects and a new relationship is created between me and these objects.
