Bio

My work combines drawings with experimental narratives. Visual storytelling offered me an opportunity to communicate my sensations with the outside world. I found my inspirations from films, memories, shadows, reflections. I am obsessed with the uncertain, untidy, uncontrolled mark-making process with real-life materials. Textures formed by the human touch can always bring me a sense of safety and existence.

Project description

This project aims to explore the state of urban life in a narrative picture book. It is a fiction story about how a middle-aged man Mr.M trapped in real life becomes brave enough to develop his ambition and take responsibilities after he goes through the world of shadow. I used model installation to make my characters and settings. Model installations are be made by mixed media: clay, cardboard paper, light, charcoal. The story is displayed with the placement and interaction between clay figures and figures on the flat paper, representing a relationship between flatness and reality. The man who is supposed to be a part of his life is detached in this way. To view the ebook: https://issuu.com/hezhuzhu/docs/mr_m_digital_book_final

Family Photo Album

This series of illustrations are based on my childhood memories in the countryside. I tried to use my paintwork to document old stories with my family members. I would like to dedicate this project to my grandma and grandpa, especially grandpa, who has had intermittent memory loss in recent years due to a brain disorder.
