"Transhumanism is a philosophical movement based on the premise that we should merge and become symbiotic with technology as a means to radically extend our fragile existence."
Harvey Everson, Momento Mori

Interview by Eva Coutts

What is your graduation project about?

A speculative design project that explores a series of artefacts that are used to experience digital memories collected in a Transhumanist future.

My work is based on the idea that through mass data collection, we will preserve our lives as ‘digital data assets’. These Assets will be passed down to our families through our future will. This in theory, would create a more insightful, richer and more contextualised narrative of our lives, fulfilling the Transhumanist desire of using technology to radically extend our lives.

My work explores a scenario beyond this, where we surpass the original incentive of owning these digital assets for sentimental value, but instead we find economic reward through collecting, trading and selling interesting and rare digital memories.

This type of personal data will become a new form of digital collectible, or a digital trading commodity viewed and experienced through ‘Memento Mori’.

How do you best like to work?

When I begin a project I attempt to explore and take inspiration from multiple sources. For research, I look towards speculative ideas but I also try to ground them in ideas linked to current affairs as a way to stay relatable.

I iterate my ideas through a series of sketches and quick prototypes to help visualise the strengths and weaknesses of an idea. I often follow this with a series of tests to see what works and what doesn’t, which I think is vital in developing a product.

Can you tell us about some of the things which inspire you and your work?

This year, a huge part of the inspiration used towards my degree project was influenced by the Transhumanist Movement. Transhumanism is a philosophical movement based on the premise that we should merge and become symbiotic with technology as a means to radically extend our fragile existence. This is something I thought was particularly fascinating and impactful, especially if we think about the surge in the death toll due to Covid 19.

What have been the highlights of your time at ECA and Edinburgh?

Studying at Edinburgh College of Art has been a truly wonderful experience. Not only have I progressed and developed my own personal style as a designer, but I have had the privilege to work and collaborate with other talented designers, of which I feel very fortunate to call them some of my closest friends.

Harvey Everson, Momento Mori
Have you got plans for after graduating?

I hope to pursue a career in design and continue developing my practice as a critique on the human condition.
