At the invitation of the graduating MA Fine Art students at ECA, 2021, artist Ilana Halperin (b.USA, lives Bute and Glasgow) offers a performative reading based on her new piece Excerpts from The Library created in collaboration with Andrew Patrizio, and commissioned by Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute and Patricia Fleming Gallery for Glasgow International 2021. The performance will be followed by a conversation and an open Q&A. It will bring the volcanic geology of Bute that inspired Halperin’s installation to the Castle Rock volcano that sits alongside Edinburgh College of Art.
There is a Volcano Behind My House runs at Mount Stuart from 6 June to 15 August 2021. It is one of Halperin’s largest solo exhibitions to date, and celebrates the 20th anniversary year of visual arts at Mount Stuart. Halperin received her MFA from the Glasgow School of Art and her BFA from Brown University. Her work combines fieldwork in diverse locations – on volcanoes in Hawaii, caves in France, geothermal springs in Japan, and in museums, archives and laboratories, with an active studio-based practice. She shares her birthday with the Eldfell volcano in Iceland.
